Artist Statement:
I see Music as an objective presence in the universe that requires a musician to act as an interface to allow Music's presence to exist on earth. Once Music comes into empirical existence, an audience is necessary to complete the triad of creation: active (musician), passive (audience), and neutral (Music). With this in mind, I view my performances and productions as a co-creation between myself, the audience, and Music. When this harmony of three is achieved, the roles of active, passive, and neutral become one and Music comes to life.
Live Set:
"birthing a sonic universe...music of the moment"
I approach
my live sets as a musical metaphor for both the universe and existence.
Like the blooming of the cosmos, I begin by holding silence (the mother of music)
and allow a single note to emerge, dissolving nothing, or no-thing to something.
I build upon the original note with layers of other notes until there is a cosmic
presence of soundscapes (space). Within the enveloping waves of the soundscapes,
a beat or pulse appears which functions as a reference point to the soundscapes
(time). In other words it marks space inside an infinite existence, like matter
within the universe. Gradually a melodic theme begins and develops according
to it's environment (evolution). At this point, the music seemingly takes on
a life of it's own and a sonic universe is born.
Bio:
Multi-instrumentalist Brill is an internationally acclaimed artist who performs a live downtempo act featuring guitar, laptop, vocals, and synths. A typical Brill set is a sonic journey that begins with atmospheric guitar soundscapes and traverses across genres, eventually expanding into an emersion of beats drenched with psychedelia. His music explores textures and moments of ambient electronica, psytrance, psy-breaks and glitch-hop, all the while seamlessly integrating elements from his jazz and rock guitar background.
A Berklee College of Music graduate and student of spirituality, Brill performs with the precision of a virtuoso, the heart of a yogi, and the inspiration of a mystic. His aim in performing is to create a sonic environment that is both sensitive and responsive to the moment. Brill explores the use of improvisation throughout his set to create a feedback loop between himself and the audience, ultimately leading to the transcendence of roles and the co-creation of a combined experience.
Brill has played guitar since he was eight and performed professionally since the age of 17. He has toured across the globe with many performers including Dale Bozzio, Mike Mangini, David Jacobs-Strain, Sarah Fimm, Chris Opperman, and Kenny Passarelli.
